According to The Himalayan Times, a serac collapsed early this morning on the Khumbu Icefall route, while a large group of climbers and Sherpas were passing through the area, rotating between Camp 1 and Camp 2.
It is not yet known if this is the same serac that has caused many headaches for expedition leaders in recent days, and which—as has been widely reported—had not yet completely collapsed. We will likely know more details in the coming hours.
The important thing is that the two people injured in the incident, an Indian climber and a Sherpa, are out of danger. The incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. this morning, when climbers and Sherpa guides from various expedition agencies were heading towards Camp 2. Authorities said the injured were evacuated by helicopter and admitted to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where their condition is not critical.
At this time, almost all of the expeditions are already underway for the first rotation between base camp and C2, while the opening of C3 has just been completed by members of EOAN, who are fixing ropes and repairing the route between C2 and the summit of Everest.
One death on Makalu II
The same source reports that a Czech climber died while attempting to reach the summit of Makalu II in the Sankhuwasabha district. David Roubinek died after suffering high-altitude pulmonary edema while descending from Camp III on Makalu II, also known as Kangchung Tse, a 7,678-meter peak in the Makalu massif.
Expedition leaders reported that Roubinek was being brought down from Camp III when he died at an altitude of approximately 7,200 meters due to his deteriorating condition.
Efforts are underway to recover his body, according to the expedition organizer. Roubinek was part of a seven-person team climbing alpine-style without a guide, managed locally by I AM Treks and Expedition.
