Statement from the Nepalese Climber’s Company
The Elite Exped agency officially confirmed the death of Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal «Nimsdai» Purja, who had been missing since the avalanche that struck an international expedition on Broad Peak (8,051 m). The announcement was made through a statement released on the organization’s official accounts, ending several days of uncertainty about the fate of the renowned mountaineer.
Nirmal Purja was one of the most influential figures in contemporary mountaineering. A former member of the British Special Forces and a leading figure in modern Himalayan climbing, he achieved worldwide recognition by completing all fourteen eight-thousanders in a record time of 6 months and 6 days, leading the first winter ascent of K2, and participating in numerous high-altitude rescues that marked a new era in the history of mountaineering.
He has 57 ascents to mountains over eight thousand meters high, most of them without the use of supplemental oxygen.
