A climber of German nationality and an Austrian woman suffered an accident yesterday morning in their attempt to climb the Guillaumet needle, as a result of an avalanche of snow and rocks, which surprised them at the base of the aforementioned needle.
It was a climber who notified the authorities about the incident. Immediately the rescue operations, in charge of National Parks, Gendarmerie, the CAX and the Andean Center, started up, but it was not until this morning that they managed to reach the point of the accident, finding the climber dead and with serious injuries to the woman, who would have trauma to the head, chest and injuries to her leg.
The local newspaper "Now Calafate" also reports that forty people started up, adding the aforementioned groups and rescuers, as soon as the accident was known. In fact, they mention that the woman would have been located in the last hours of yesterday.
What is confirmed is that the injured mountaineer is currently being transferred to the High Complexity Hospital in El Calafate. She is about a 28-year-old Austrian climber, whose identity (as well as that of the late mountaineer) did not transcend for the moment.
