"So here I am at the Istanbul airport ready to leave for Kathmandu." This is how Simone Moro opened her winter season, at the beginning of December. The idea is to repeat the attempt from the previous year with Alex Txikón at Manaslu. But prior to that, a lot of activity.
Among that activity was the trekking through the Khumbu to Ama Dablam the first stop, and then continue the trip to the current objective, Manaslu, which was denied last year.
Manaslu in winter is not something simple. It is not at any time of the year, but winter is very particular. We can visualize it these days, in the images that come to us, with a very loaded mountain. Excessively loaded, and a climate that begins, well into winter, to do its thing.
This type of company needs, more than the experience of the actors, a fact that logically in this case we take for granted, with a little help from Mother Nature. Just like K2 last year, when for at least a couple of days, the planets aligned.
There is less display here. Much experience, but less deployment, with which, the chances of success, together with the interest in a superlative goal, begin to be interesting.
At the beginning of this week, Simone himself reported in a statement, apart from the arrival at the Manaslu base camp, some concepts regarding the weather conditions and what can be expected in that regard.
“Today, Monday, December 27, we are in the Manaslu base camp, at 4800m. It´s been snowing for three days, a little less tonight. So it will be for the next two days, and after the 30th, a month of good weather should arrive. In the meantime, we must be patient. "
Well, very optimistic Simone waiting for a month of good weather, that would be wonderful, we will see how mother nature behaves.
On the other hand, Alex, I recently published a part that goes in this sense: “After three days of non-stop snowing, today it has finally stopped and the sun has risen. And although it may seem that we can get going, nothing is further from reality. We have a lot of work ahead of us at base camp, to make it habitable and safe again, since there is more than two meters of snow. And that we go up, it will be very very hard, due to the amount of accumulated snow. But we are at full capacity, working as a team and very happy to be able to say goodbye to the year from the Himalayas again ”.
Two very tough men, with a lot of accumulated experience. As much as the snow that stops in front of them to complicate the road. But they already know what this is all about.
