David Villareal, a young mountaineer and cyclist, originally from Monterrey, lost his life yesterday, after suffering an accident on Pico de Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico, located between the states of Veracruz and Puebla, according to local media, a few hours ago.
According to the information, David requested assistance, after suffering a fall, and was waiting for the rescue teams, who unfortunately, could not arrive in time.
The General Coordination of Civil Protection of the Government of Puebla reported that the athlete, 27 years old, was accompanied by another mountaineer, who was unharmed and managed to descend on his own.
According to the official report, both climbed with the support of guides from the Summit Orizaba company to the area known as El Refugio.
Later, they continued their ascent by their own means to La Cumbre, where the accident occurred.
The rescue efforts were carried out by specialists from the Alpine Relief Group, guides and service providers in the area, as well as by the Civil Protection rescue brigade.
However, adverse weather conditions and the rugged terrain complicated rescue maneuvers. Villareal was an experienced athlete and in 2020 he managed to live for a month at the top of Pico de Orizaba, a feat that at the time received wide recognition in the sports field.
The mountaineer endured eight hours of injury at the top of Pico de Orizaba before losing his life, and awaited rescue teams. David’s idea was to descend from the summit by bicycle, but an unfortunate fall, which caused him significant trauma, especially to the head, led to the outcome.
According to Colonel Bernabé de los Santos, head of the General Coordination of Civil Protection of the State and Disaster Risk Management, at around 12:00 on Wednesday, February 12, the 911 emergency number received a call about an injured climber on the highest volcano in Mexico.
Regarding Pico de Orizaba, or Citlaltépetl, it is an inactive volcano of 5,636m, which is the highest point in Mexico. It is the highest volcano in North America. It was first climbed by the French mountaineer Alejandro Doignon in 1848. In 1873, Martin Tritschler, father of the Mexican archbishops Martín and Guillermo Tritschler y Córdova, reached the summit and raised the Mexican flag on its summit.
In order to protect the natural beauty of the region, President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río ordered the creation of the Pico de Orizaba National Park on December 16, 1936, with an area of 197.5 km² (19,750 ha), which encompasses the volcanic cone and its surrounding area, including part of the municipalities of Tlachichuca, Ciudad Serdán, La Perla, Mariano Escobedo and Calcahualco, among others. The decree came into effect on January 4, 1937.
