In the run-up to a new spring season on eight-thousanders, a group of eight Icefall Doctors set off yesterday morning, Sunday 9, from Namche Bazaar, heading for Mount Everest base camp, where they will fix the route from that point to the summit of the world, which they expect to reach in the first days of May.
The team led by Ang Sarki Sherpa accompanied by two members of the kitchen staff, would arrive at base camp in a couple of days, said Tshering Sherpa, Executive Director of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC).
The team will fix and maintain the Khumbu Icefall route for climbers attempting to scale Mount Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in the spring climbing season of 2025. The team includes so-called “Icefall Doctors” Ang Sarki Sherpa (Team Leader A), Dawa Jangbu Sherpa (Team Leader B), Dawa Nuru Sherpa, Nima Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Chhiri Sherpa, Lakpa Sona Sherpa, Mingma Gyalzen Sherpa and Thendu Sherpa.
The team also includes kitchen staff, Ngawang Thanten and Wangdi Gelbu Sherpa, the SPCC said in its statement.
The more experienced Icefall Doctors will start opening climbing routes by fixing ladders and ropes for the main climbing season, Sherpa said. «The team will begin rope fixing work on the treacherous section of the icefall after conducting a ground survey early next week,» he added.
According to him, for the next three months, the team will work tirelessly to build and maintain the Khumbu Icefall route, ensuring safe passage for the climbers. The Nepal Expedition Operators Association said that operators from around the world have already started transporting their loads towards Mount Everest Base Camp, located at 5,360m.
